Had enough of poets, storytellers, illustrators and novelists? Looking for something different? Try a non-fiction author visit. It’s ‘literacy plus' –informational literacy plus key skill sets such as research, teamwork, negotiation, co-operative learning, and more.

From Edinburgh to Southampton, Redruth to Norwich, Steve has enjoyed hundreds of visits to schools, libraries, book festivals and science fairs. There’s no set routine – each event is tailored to the wishes of the school or venue. But a full day is assured, as many sessions as can be fitted into the timetable. Science topics can be chosen for those being studied at the time – Steve has written on many aspects, from dinosaurs and volcanoes to chemicals, conservation and space.

We can talk about various aspects of writing, or widen out topics to include research and information gathering (often a knotty problem these days), the design process, artworks and photographs, and general publishing both for books and online. There is usually plenty of interaction and fun, with projects for the listeners, often in groups to emphasize – (perhaps unexpectedly) the team nature of my work.

And the costs are almost certainly much lower than you think.

‘The children have given so much positive feedback about your visit and all the teachers said “He’s good”!! You know you’ve cracked it when teachers say “He’s good”!!!!’

Near Spalding, Lincs

‘Thanks again for your time today. Year groups have really got a lot out of the workshops and managed to have a giggle too.  We were very impressed with your manner with the children and the adults learnt a few new facts!’

‘Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your excellent talks yesterday. I hope you were not too exhausted – yours was a particularly demanding schedule.  Thank you too for your very generous gifts of all the books.’

Ottery St Mary, Devon

‘Great day Steve, thanks so much for coming to see us. The pupils really enjoyed the workshop workouts and we have continued those science themes into their term work.’
